Welcome Home,
We hope you are getting settled in and life is getting back to normal for you. It has been a long journey and the paperwork is almost over. You have only citizenship and two post placement reports remaining. Listed below are the general guidelines to follow for citizenship and the requirements for postplacement reports.
Citizenship and Re-Adoption:
1. Be sure that you keep all of the documents concerning your adoption in a safe, secure place. This includes the documents you had before the trip and all those you received when you adopted your child.
2. Contact an attorney about a re-adoption. This may also be known as an affirmation of adoption. It's purpose is to have a U.S. Court confirm the validity of the adoption and create a legal adoption document in the United States. You can also include the name change for your child at this time.
3. After the re-adoption has been completed you can apply to your State for a “Certificate of Foreign Birth”. (It may be known by another name in some states) This is a birth certificate issued by your State.
4. If both parents traveled (or a single parent in a single parent adoption) to adopt and both parents saw the child before the adoption, then your child is now a US citizen and the USCIS office should send you a citizenship certificate. If one parent traveled to adopt then you must apply for citizenship after you have re-adopted your child. The form to use for citizenship is N-600 and can be found at http://uscis.gov . The USCIS is constantly changing their forms and required documents so check this site for the current form required. It is important that you proceed with citizenship as soon as possible because he/she may not be eligible for some Federal benefits if he/she is not a U.S. Citizen.
5. To claim your child on your taxes and enter your child in school you must have a either a Social Security Number (SSN) or a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). Depending on your local Social Security Office you may or may not be able to get an SSN. If they refuse to issue an SSN before your child is a citizen then you should go to the IRS office and apply for a TIN. After your child is a citizen you may then receive an SSN.
